Hey guys! As you may be aware, vegan cheese is pretty hard to find in supermarkets in Japan... Fortunately, a new vegan cheese has hit the shelves in everyday supermarkets- 'Beyond tofu'. I decided to try it out for myself after hearing mixed reviews. Click below to see how it went ;) I found the cheese 'Beyond Tofu' at the supermarket Maruetsu in Kawasaki. They sold both block style cheese and cubed/crubmley cheese. Both were about 400 yen which equates to about £2.70. After checking the ingredients, i noticed that this brand of cheese has very similar things going on as a very famous cheese back home- Violife. However when i got home, i noticed that not only does it have a more 'cheesey' texture when you cut it, but it also looks a whole lot more like cows cheese to the point where i wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it were placed next to cows cheese. My favorite way to eat cheese is on a toastie with tomatoes which is what i decided to go for with 'Beyond tofu' as one of the most frequently asked questions about vegan cheese is "DOES IT MELT?!" After only about two minutes in the grill i noticed that the cut tomatoes were sliding all over the place (see picture on the right) at which point i jumped for joy knowing that this cheese does in fact melt :') I took a bite of my vegan cheesey tomato toastie and i was shocked at how similar it was to my memory of cheese toasties from my childhood. While the flavour isn't too strong it can definitely be used as a cheddar substitute in sandwiches, pizzas, pastas and salads. The texture was almost like the real thing and felt so much more refreshing and healthy than when i ate cheese as a child (baring in mind that I'm not a baby cow and therefore had an un-diagnosed cows milk allergy...:')) Something that caught my eye about this product was that it was not only vegan cheese but boasted to be high protein with the words 'miracle protein' on the front of the packaging.
I am quite an active person and will never shy away from increasing my protein intake so decided to check out the statistics (top right). Unfortunately i found that the cheese contains only 1.9g or protein per 100g of product. To put that into perspective, the block cheese is 150g and not very large at all. While it may not be a high protein source, it is still a protein source so I'm happy with this purchase regardless :) I have since added this cheese to my weekly shopping list and have it for breakfast on toast when I'm feeling extra hungry. I loved this cheese and would totally reccomend it to any vegans or vegetarians or anyone wanting to give some cruelty free toasties and pizzas a go ;) Until next time guys! <3

Greetings! I'm hoping this will come to the US one day, but also that it's not got as much fat, and especially saturated fat as Violife and the others.
