Aoyama in general is a bit of a haven for vegans. Most weekends the area hosts Aoyama Farmers Market which sees many local businesses coming together to sell their produce and products. Luckily for us, many of the stalls and stands sell vegan foods, from cakes and cookies to organic fruit and vegetables. Nestled right in the heart of Aoyama (Shibuya) is the vegan restaurant 8ablish. Being only about a 5 minute Walk from Omotesando station and the bustling Harajuku area, this restaurant proved to be a calm and peaceful end to a busy day of shopping! One of the great things about 8ablish is that it is not only a restaurant but also sells vegan items such as bags, perfumes, soaps and also ready-made meals like salad and pastas for people who are on-the-go. Something i also noticed was that the atmosphere was slightly different to other vegan restaurants that I've visited in the sense that they appear to be focusing on the idea of a fresh, healthy and vegan lifestyle and not just vegan food and treats. The company also the only company I've come across as of yet to be actively promoting Meat Free Mondays and even have an explanation on their menu as to what the concept of MFM is. As some of you may already know, its common for Japanese restaurants to provide what is called a 'Set menu' which usually consists of your main meal plus one or two side dishes. However, this is not always obvious to customers and can oftentimes not even be translated into the English menu. Because of this, many people may think that their main dish is expensive but as it turns out, they actually get two appetizers and a dessert! *This totally happened to me at 8ablish* Perhaps i wasn't paying attention but every time a new dish arrived i looked shocked as if i was living some kind of heavenly dream where i am at the end of a non-stop conveyor belt of delicious vegan food. I ordered the gratin (vegan cheesey pasta for the layperson-i.e. me), which came with a pumpkin soup, salad and even an ice cream dessert (not pictured, i inhaled it before it touched the table) Overall, i really enjoyed my meal but if i'm being 100% no bullshitting honest, I was still hungry afterwards. The portion sizes here are not what I'm used to and while i ended up eating a Tofu Katsu sandwich about half-an hour later from Natural House across the street, I'm sure that most people with normal, non-rhino sized appetites would find the portions here just right.
