Perfectly located just inside the department store Lumine in Shinjuku station east exit is this little gem. As you may have guessed from the name, Alfred Tea Room is a quaint little cafe that sells hot drinks, smoothies, several types of vegan cake and even.... wait for it... Falafel wraps! I know, right? Falafel wraps? In Tokyo?! Yes my lovely fellow veggies and vegans, ATR sells delicious and healthy vegan falafel wraps with what i can only assume to be...REAL HUMMUS. Dun dun dun. While this dainty little pitta wrap filled with veggies and gorgeously coloured beet hummus might not be the exact equivalent of the type of falafel wraps that many vegans enjoy in their home countries, it really does fill that very falafel-shaped hole in a hungry vegans existence. Before trying this tasty little veggie pocket i would have been ashamed to recommend any hummus-filled foods in Japan as to my experience, the only hummus that exists here comes in a suspicious powder-form where you add water and mix it into a hummus-like-but-nothing-like-it-really terrifying paste. However, I totally recommend trying this yummy treat in Alfred Tea Rooms and i hope you'll be just as delightfully surprised as i was. "Okay, so they have Falafel wraps...but what else?!" I hear you asking. Well be prepared to be blown away. Alfred Tea Rooms also sell several types of vegan cakes and treats from strawberry shortcake, chocolate fudge cake, Mount Blanc cake and several scones. In fact, not only are about 80-90% of the cakes in ATR vegan, but they are also clearly marked as being so, so there's no risk of mistranslation or ordering something that contains any animal-derived ingredients. Hurrah! Everytime i go to Alfred Team Room, i feel as though i've stepped inside some kind of Alice-in Wonderland type world filled with delicious treats, pretty little teacups and adorable pink decor. The atmosphere is very homely, with plenty of seating and friendly staff. And better yet, its so close to Shinjuku station that it will only take you about a 4 minute walk to get to the JR station and on your way home with your take-away box filled with chocolate fudge cake! There is actually another location in Aoyama which i haven't been to but will post the address below! While i do love this place, it would be nice to see more vegan options as far as the wraps and sandwiches are concerned so, given that i give it the following stars... Atmosphere ***** Food **** Value for money **** If you have any questions or suggestions, or even any feedback please feel free to contact me on the comment box below or go to my contact page to get in touch with my on Instagram or Twitter!
