Today i finally made it to Shiro in Jiyugaoka! After reading about their interesting vegan journey and concept online, i decided i needed to check it out for myself. Click below to find out how it went... :) Shiro is essentially a beauty cafe, offering delicious vegan food as well as selling natural and eco-friendly makeup and beauty products. However, it wasn't always the vegan haven that is currently is. It was only this year, 2018 that Shiro re-invented their entire concept and menu from offering meat and diary dishes to changing to a 100% vegan menu. Their website states that the change came from wanting to promote a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle that anyone can enjoy. Of course, long-term patrons of the establishment we'rent that happy with the change and some people even refused to enter the cafe once the switch occurred but Shiro is now more successful than ever and has a huge following of vegan and non-vegan customers who appreciate a business that stands up for its ethics. The main reason i cam here was because, as we all know, Japan is getting pretty warm this time of year... (37 degrees... :')) and i have been searching for a vegan sundae for a good few weeks now. While soy and almond ice cream aren't too hard to find in supermarkets like Aeon and Foodium, i really have been looking for a more shameful amount of ice cream that possibly even has some kind of brownie, nuts....all the trimmings! So when i heard that Shiro offer just what I'm looking for, i decided to check it out for myself. After already eating lunch at T's (My favorite restaurant of all time and also located in Jiyugaoka only a 2 minute walk from Shiro) i decided to pop into Shiro and check out their dessert menu. They offer three kinds of vegan pancakes and two ice cream sundaes, which is more than enough options for me as i usually put up with a sugary cup of tea for dessert when out with friends :') The pancakes were soooo fluffy and came with coy cream and maple syrup and were soooo filling and exactly how i imagined them to be in my dreams <3 The sundae was also so delicious and came with nuts, cream, chocolate icecream, brownie and cookie crumbs. It was well worth coming here for dessert and its officially my new favorite dessert establishment in Tokyo. One day i hope to come back to try their vegan burgers, curry, soups and everything else on the menu! One thing i will say is if you are looking to come here at lunch time on a weekend, be prepared to wait to be seated as I had to write my name down and wait for about 25 minutes for a seat. And yes, it was worth it.
